On Kreayshawn and the Utility of Black Women »

Her appropriative swag is yet another reminder (not that we needed any more this month) of how little black women are valued in our society, even in genres we co-create. In a moment where cool is synonymous with swag, a particular manifestation of black masculinity, Kreayshawn’s dismissiveness and denigration of black women animate her success.

Moya B. of Crunk Feminist Collective does an EXCELLENT job of explaining why Kreayshawn is so offensive in this article. Highly recommended.

P.S. - Don’t get it twisted like I’m hating on her cos she’s white. It ain’t even about that. Since the early 1980s, there have been plenty of women rapping who are (1) white or otherwise non-black, (2) genuinely talented, and (3) have never had to become caricatures of black womanhood to get recognition. Kreayshawn just ain’t one of them.
